Ukraine: Rivne region wishes to ban timber export

Vasilyi Chervonyi, chairman of Rivne regional administration, addressed Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko asking to ban the export of timber from the region, www.lesprom.ru informs. According to him, regional forests are reducing while export volumes continue to grow.

Beginning January 2005 the region shipped abroad timber for UAH 44 million (app. $8.7 million), during 2004 — for more than UAH 100 million ($20 million). In 2001 timber constituted only 20% of export sales, while in 2005 — 80%.

Vasilyi Chervonyi underlined that 100 export companies (only 20 are state-owned) sell finewood as well. During 2004, they exported 5.8 thousand m3 of oak.
