Torraspapel obtains PEFC chain of custody certification for its Sarrià de Ter and Sant Joan les Fonts mills
The
chain of custody (CoC) of the Sant Joan les Fonts and Sarrià de Ter
mills belonging to Torraspapel, part of the Lecta Group, have recently
been awarded PEFC forestry certification following an audit by AENOR,
the independent Spanish standards agency. Previously, the Zaragoza,
Motril and Algeciras mills had also achieved this distinction. PEFC
forest certification has been set up as a system of voluntary
endorsement and certification of sustainable forest management,
consisting of two basic elements: SFM (sustainable forest management)
certification, which guarantees the survival of the forest for future
generations, and CoC certification, guaranteeing a system to verify the
flow of timber throughout the production process. Chain
of custody certification is a necessary complement to Sustainable
forestry management certification, since it is the mechanism that makes
it possible to verify, through traceability, that the timber used to
manufacture pulp comes from forests managed in accordance with
sustainability criteria. Moreover,
obtaining CoC certification increases internal process efficiency,
improves the market appeal of our papers and demonstrates Torraspapel's
sense of responsibility and commitment towards the environment and
sustainable development. Torraspapel
is complying with the environmental commitments assumed in its 2004
environmental report, and with these latest certifications, all of its
coated fine paper mills have now achieved PEFC chain of custody
certification. In the next few months Torraspapel plans to begin the
FSC forestry certification process. In addition, all of Torraspapel's mills also hold ISO 9001 quality certificates and ISO 14001 environmental certificates. Torraspapel
is a leading European producer of coated fine paper, specialty paper
and self-adhesives for labels, as well as a leading paper merchant in
Southern Europe.
