Japanese imports of glued timber from China increased 248% to 58 thousand cub m within 6 months in 2004 (64 thousand cub m in 2003), director of international projects of the US Council on softwood timber Paul Broadman announced in his address during CINTRAFOR’S 2004 conference on international forest products markets.

China occupies the 3rd position among the suppliers of glued timber to Japan after Austria (82.476 thousand cub m within 6 months in 2004) and Finland (64.816 thousand cub m). By the end of 2004 China is expected to overcome Finland and rise to the 2nd position, Paul Broadman said.

The 3 leading suppliers are followed by Sweden – 36.547 thousand cub m, Germany – 28.291 thousand cub m, Canada – 14.092 thousand cub m, Russia – 12.117 thousand cub m, the US – 3.657 thousand cub m, New Zealand – 2.541 thousand cub m, Brazil – 1.197 thousand cub m. Overall imports of glued imports to Japan were estimated at 304.143 thousand cub m within 6 months in 2004.

China is the 2nd world’s leading timber importer, while 7 years ago the country occupied the 7th position in the list. In 1997-2002 China almost doubled timber products imports.

The timber supplied from Russia, Indonesia and Malaysia accounts for 50% of Chinese imports. Russia has been the largest timber supplier to China since 1998, average annual imports growth from Russia is 73%.

The large number of JAS-certified enterprises in China positively contributes to the development of the national forest industry market.
