Russia: Putin proposes raising timber export tariffs
Russian President Vladimir Putin deemed it necessary to increase the
timber export tariffs on rough logs and to lower those on the import of
woodworking equipment to Russia. He was displeased with the state of
affairs in the timber industry. He recalled that he had set before the
cabinet 5-6 years ago the task of rectifying the situation, but “very
little” was done since then to achieve this end. In May 2006, the
Russian government raised the export tax on logs from ˆ2.5 to ˆ4 per m3.
Recently, it was announced that export tax on logs would be marked up
to ˆ8 per m3 in 2007. With regards to forest privatization, he
dismissed the idea as a premature step that would not be considered
during his mandate.
