Canada: Higher prices for petroleum products continue to influence the change in manufacturers’ prices ..

Higher prices for petroleum products continue to influence the change in manufacturers’ prices in February, as measured by the Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI). The IPPI increased 0.6% in February, following a 0.3% rise in January. On an annual basis, the IPPI rose 2.3%, its seventh consecutive increase. From a monthly perspective, higher prices for petroleum and coal products (+10.0%) had a major impact, followed to a lesser degree by lumber and other wood products (+1.1%). Higher prices for softwood lumber were the main contributors to the monthly increase, mainly because of more demand and some stockpiling in anticipation of spring construction activity. Lower prices were measured for pulp and paper products (-0.2%).

The year-over-year comparison shows price decreases for lumber and other wood products (-6.2%) and pulp and paper products (-1.9%).
