Production output in Russia's timber industry complex grew 1.6% during the first quarter of 2003
Production output in Russia's timber industrial sector comprised 1.6% over the
first quarter of 2003 as compared to March-January last year, with growth rate
of timber and paper products still considerably lower than the industry's
average of 106.0%. The data is suggested in "Overall results of Russia's
timber industry complex work over first quarter of 2003", an analytical report
developed by Lesprom Industry Consulting.
The situation revived significantly in March — production output in timber
industry upped 5%, exceeding by far growth rate of the previous months, which
helped make up for the January decline and achieve positive results in the first
quarter of 2003. However, this recovery itself is not a forecast of stable
development on the following quarter.
The authors of the report consider unsatisfactory performance of logging
industry to be major reason for such instability. Logging industry remains the
weakest sector of Russia's timber industry complex. According to the results of
the first quarter, production output in logging industry only slightly exceeded
the level of the previous year and remained 8% lower than the respective figure
over 2001. Without stabilizing logging production the entire industry will have to
face the risk of growth rate slow down.
As it was earlier, growth of timber and paper production output is provided by
enterprises of pulp-and-paper industry who upped production by 3% over the
first quarter of 2003. Negative aftermath of January production decline in
pulp-and-paper industry was fully removed by the end of March. In the near
future, pulp-and-paper industry is very likely to achieve 6 to 7% monthly
growth rate, which is much more typical for it.
According to estimates of Lesprom Industry Consulting experts woodworking
industry remains in stagnation and is not likely to progress significantly within
the next three or four months.
