US Residential Construction in August
Building Permits
Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,886,000, according to estimates reported today by the U.S. Commerce Department's Census Bureau. This is 4.8 percent (±0.8%) above the revised July rate of 1,800,000 and is 10.7 percent (±1.0%) above the August 2002 estimate of 1,704,000.
Single-family authorizations in August were at a rate of 1,475,000; this is 2.9 percent (±0.8%) above the July figure of 1,434,000. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 333,000 in August.
Housing Starts
Privately-owned housing starts in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,820,000. This is 3.8 percent (±6.2%) below the revised July estimate of 1,892,000, but is 11.7 percent (±8.8%) above the August 2002 rate of 1,630,000. Single-family housing starts in August 2003 were at a rate of 1,476,000; this is 4.0 percent (±5.9%) below the July figure of 1,537,000. The August estimate for units in buildings with five units or more was 308,000.
Housing Completions
Privately-owned housing completions in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,575,000, according to estimates released jointly today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 6.5 percent (±6.6%) below the revised July estimate of 1,685,000 and is 7.6 percent (±6.9%) below the August 2002 rate of 1,705,000.
Single-family housing completions in August 2003 were at a rate of 1,315,000; this is 7.1 percent (±7.2%) below the July figure of 1,415,000. The August rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 241,000.
