Decreasing European Hardwood Production
The currency fluctuations between Euro and US Dollar are having a major impact on the export opportunities for European producers. The EOS therefore recalled its strong appeal to the European authorities and the European Central Bank to ensure that the value of the Euro is kept within reasonable limits so as not to destroy the export capabilities or even the livelihood of European companies through further opening up the European market to cheap imports.
The production of sawn hardwood, that has been on the decline for some years now, could stabilise at a level of about 8.2 million cbm, with a slight increase in consumption. The sector is, however, still experiencing difficulties due to the low level of demand for sawn beech, with several producers having been forced to close down or switch to other species.
