Higher European Sawn Softwood Production
Over the same period, consumption in the EOS member countries has remained fairly stable (-0.4% — 64.4 million cbm) to recover again in 2004. Overall, consumption is at a stable level for about 4 years now.
Wood supply
With a total volume of 90.8 million cbm, sawn softwood production in the European Organisation of the Sawmill industry (EOS) member countries in 2003 is expected to have increased by 2% compared to 2002. For 2004, a minor growth rate of 0.9% is predicted.
Whereas the Northern countries reported a normal wood supply situation, sawmills in Central-Europe were confronted with a higher supply of lower quality logs due to bark beetle attacks or from water stored logs following windfall. The producers consider this as a temporary and limited situation, partly caused by the extreme weather conditions in the summer of 2003 in Central-Europe. Meanwhile, the log supply is balanced again. The EOS members also welcomed the efforts made by its Russian members in creating a sustainability certification scheme for Russian timber.
